AI features and transparency

Last updated: 2026-05-20

Livebooks uses third-party AI services to generate optional ambient audio and images, to summarise chapters for catch-up, and to help authors with story-coherence tools. This page lists every AI feature, the provider behind it, and how content generated by AI is labelled when shown to you, in compliance with Article 50 of Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 (AI Act).

What we mean by 'AI-generated'

Content generated by AI on Livebooks falls into three classes: (a) AI-generated images (per-paragraph and per-chapter ambient illustrations produced by fal.ai); (b) AI-generated audio (per-chapter ambient music and per-paragraph sound effects produced by ElevenLabs); (c) AI-generated text shown to readers (catch-up summaries of prior chapters generated by Anthropic Claude). Authors also use AI tools privately in the editor (codex extraction, continuity checking, chapter summarisation, fuzzy alias detection), but those outputs are author-only and not republished as-is to readers.

Per-feature provider list

Ambient images — fal.ai (US, under SCC), gated to Pro tier for generation; free tier reads from a shared cache. Ambient audio (music + SFX) — ElevenLabs (UK/US, under SCC), same Pro/free split. Catch-up summary and codex helpers — Anthropic Claude (Haiku/Sonnet 4.x, US, under SCC). Codex embedding for fuzzy alias detection — OpenAI text-embedding-3-small (US, under SCC). All AI calls are logged for cost auditing without storing the prompt content beyond the operational window.

How AI-generated content is labelled

Wherever AI-generated content is presented to you in the reader, an 'AI' badge appears next to it: on the catch-up summary dialog, and in the reader bar whenever a chapter is presenting AI-generated ambient audio or image. The badge is a clickable link that brings you back to this page. We do not embed cryptographic watermarks (no fal.ai or ElevenLabs API currently provides them); the visible badge is the disclosure required under AI Act Article 50(2). Author-supplied prose (the story text itself) is never AI-generated on Livebooks — the platform prohibits AI prose generation as a product positioning choice. AI tools used by authors in the private editor (codex extraction, continuity checking, summarisation) are not part of this disclosure because their output is not republished to readers as-is.

Your choices

You can turn off ambient audio and ambient images at any time from the reader bar; the catch-up summary is offered, not auto-played, so you can dismiss it. Authors choose whether to generate ambient content for their work. If you object to processing your reading or writing data by these AI providers on legitimate-interest grounds, contact us via the legal contact channel linked from the Footer and we will assess on a case-by-case basis.
